Guided Scenario Practice (Solo)
Instructions: Choose 1–2 of the scenarios below. Read it carefully, then close your eyes and visualize the moment unfolding. Use the self-dialogue prompts to walk through the scene.
Scenario 1: Conflict at Work
Your coworker blames you for missing a deadline. You feel your heart racing and your face getting hot.
Ask Yourself:
- What is my breathing like right now? Can I slow it?
- What “I” statement can I use to describe how I feel?
- Can I acknowledge my coworker’s stress without accepting blame?
Respond Out Loud or in Writing:
Practice saying something like:
“I understand this deadline mattered to you. I’m also feeling frustrated. Let’s figure out where the communication broke down.”
Scenario 2: Family Argument
A family member says something disrespectful and your instinct is to snap back.
Ask Yourself:
- Where do I feel tension in my body?
- What would I say if I wanted to be heard and keep the peace?
- What can I say that shows I’m listening—even if I disagree?
Practice Your Response:
“I’m upset by what you said, but I want us to talk about this without yelling. Can we take a moment to calm down first?”
Scenario 3: Frustration in Public
You’re cut off in traffic. You feel angry and disrespected.
Ask Yourself:
- Will yelling or reacting change the situation?
- How can I de-escalate myself right now?
- Can I say something to myself to shift my focus?
Practice:
Take 3 deep breaths. Then say out loud or journal:
“I’m safe. I don’t need to let someone else’s actions control how I feel.”
