Overview

Teen & Child Therapy in McKinney, TX

When a child or teen is struggling, parents often notice it first in changes at home or school: withdrawal, anxiety, anger, falling grades, or conflict that did not used to be there. Teen and child therapy at MindLift Alliance gives young people a safe place to be heard and the skills to cope.

We support children and teens in McKinney and North Texas with anxiety, depression, school and social pressure, self-esteem, behavioral concerns, and family communication. For families raising children between two cultures, we understand the added weight of identity, expectations, and generational differences, and we can work in Mandarin when that helps your family feel understood.

What to know

What working with us is like

A closer look at how we work, who we help, and when to reach out.

What the first session looks like

For younger children, the first session often includes a parent or caregiver so your child feels safe and you can share what you have been noticing. For teens, we usually give them space to speak for themselves, because trust is what makes the work possible. We explain plainly what therapy is and is not, including how confidentiality works and when a parent would be looped in, so everyone knows where they stand.

How we work with young people

Children and teens rarely open up on command, so we meet them where they are. Depending on age, that might mean play, art, or activity for younger kids and a more conversational, collaborative approach for teens. We work with concerns like anxiety, low mood, school stress, friendship and identity struggles, and behavioral changes, always at a pace that respects what the young person is ready to share.

Partnering with parents

Parents are part of the work, not bystanders to it. We keep you informed about themes and progress while protecting the trust your child needs to be honest in the room, and we offer concrete guidance on how to support them at home. When family dynamics are part of the picture, we can bring the family into sessions too.

When to reach out

Persistent changes in mood, sleep, appetite, grades, or friendships, pulling away from things they used to enjoy, or big shifts in behavior are all worth paying attention to. Childhood and adolescence come with normal ups and downs, but if something feels off for more than a couple of weeks, an early conversation can keep a small struggle from becoming a larger one.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What age children do you work with?

We work with both children and teenagers, adapting our approach to each young person's age, needs, and comfort.

Will I be involved in my child's therapy?

Parent involvement is often part of effective care, balanced with a young person's need for a confidential space. Your clinician will explain how this works for your family.

My teen does not want to go. What can I do?

Reluctance is common. We focus on building trust and meeting teens where they are, which often shifts their willingness over the first sessions.

Do you offer bilingual therapy for our family?

Yes. We offer counseling in Mandarin and English, which can help bicultural families communicate and feel understood.

Is online therapy available for teens?

Yes. Secure online sessions are available across Texas, with in-person sessions in McKinney.
