When your teen’s entire friend group moves away

What parents in Celina tell us

Celina has grown rapidly over the past decade, transforming from a small commuter town into a bedroom community for families working across the Dallas metro. That growth brings opportunity but also disruption. Your teenager may have spent their early years in one school community, only to find that same community scattered when families move on to newer subdivisions further north or relocate entirely for work. The Dallas North Tollway makes it easy to leave Celina; it also makes it easy for your teenager’s friends to leave. Unlike moves within a single district, this kind of friendship loss happens gradually, with classmates absorbed into different social ecosystems before anyone fully notices.

When an entire friendship group disperses, your teenager does not always say so directly. Instead, you might notice a shift in after-school patterns, less interest in activities they used to enjoy, or a general flatness at home that does not quite feel like depression because they are still getting up and getting to school. Grades often hold steady because academic performance is separate from social connection. What changes first is the texture of their life outside the classroom: fewer texts, fewer plans made, more time alone in their room. Parents sometimes wait for their teenager to “bounce back” or assume a new friend group will form naturally. But the loss of an entire social structure is real grief, and it can take longer to move through without someone to talk it through with.

MindLift Alliance is in McKinney, a short drive from Celina via the Dallas North Tollway. We offer evening appointments after school, secure video sessions from home, and we work with most major Texas insurance plans. Your teenager does not have to navigate this alone, and neither do you.

  • All their friends moved away at once
  • We’re the only ones left here now
  • She doesn’t know how to start over
  • Nobody at the new school knows her yet
  • He’s withdrawn since we lost that whole group
  • She keeps asking when we can move back
If your teen is in immediate danger or talking about ending their life, call 911, or call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Teens can also text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line. LGBTQ+ young people can reach The Trevor Project 24/7 on 1-866-488-7386. For eating and body-image concerns, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline is staffed by licensed clinicians on 1-866-662-1235. This page describes scheduled outpatient therapy and is not a crisis service.

The work

Goals set with your teen, progress shared with you, at a pace that keeps them engaged.

Earn the trust first, or nothing else works

Teenagers are unusually good at detecting an adult with an agenda. Our clinicians are trained in CBT, DBT skills, and family-systems work, and they spend the early sessions establishing that the room genuinely belongs to your teen.

  • Trust before insight. A teenager who does not trust the room will not use it. That comes first, and it takes as long as it takes.
  • You stay informed. You will know how therapy is going and anything affecting safety. You will not get a transcript.
  • CBT, DBT and family systems. The approaches with the strongest evidence base for adolescents, matched to your teen.
  • Licensed and confidential. All therapists are licensed in Texas and regulated through BHEC.

Questions from Celina parents

My teenager lost their entire friend group when we moved to Celina. They won’t talk about it, and I’m worried they’re becoming isolated. Is this something counseling can actually help with?
Yes. Losing a friendship group mid-adolescence is a real loss, and the silence around it often means your teen is struggling to process it alone. Counseling gives them space to talk through the grief, anger, or shame that sometimes follows a move, and helps them build new connections without feeling like they’re betraying the old ones. You’re right to take the isolation seriously.
They say they don’t want to talk to anyone about this. How do you get a reluctant teenager to open up?
We don’t force it. Instead, we meet them where they are and let them set the pace. Many teenagers are skeptical at first – that’s normal and it doesn’t mean counseling won’t work. Our job is to create a space where they feel heard, not interrogated. Often the real conversation starts once they realize we’re not here to fix them or report back to you.
How far is your McKinney office from Celina, and can we do video sessions instead?
You’re about 30 minutes north of us via the Dallas North Tollway. We offer both in-person and secure video sessions, so you can choose what works best for your family. Many families alternate between the two, or start with video to build trust before coming in.
Will you tell me what my teenager says in their sessions?
No. What your teen shares with their counselor stays confidential – that’s what makes the space safe for them to be honest. We will tell you if we’re concerned about immediate safety. Otherwise, you’ll hear from us only with your teen’s permission, or if they ask us to help communicate something to you.
How soon could we schedule a first appointment?
Most new clients are seen within one week. We know that when a parent reaches out, the need is often urgent. Call us or fill out our intake form, and we’ll get you scheduled as quickly as we can.
