What parents in Garland tell us

Collin County has grown faster than its mental health infrastructure. School districts here are well-resourced and academically rigorous, but the county’s rapid expansion means waiting lists are long, clinics fill quickly, and many families find themselves driving 45 minutes to an hour just to reach the nearest therapist. That distance compounds the problem: your teenager is already reluctant, and asking them to commit to weekly sessions across multiple tollways makes consistency nearly impossible. What starts as a scheduling barrier becomes a reason to stop going altogether.

High-functioning distress is easy to miss. Your teenager’s grades may hold steady. They may not be in obvious crisis. But you notice they are sleeping less, eating differently, withdrawing from friends they used to text constantly, or the household rhythm has shifted in ways you cannot quite name. Sometimes it shows up as irritability that feels new, or flatness when they talk about things that used to matter. Because nothing dramatic has happened and nothing is obviously broken, parents often wait. The honest signals are not in grades or test scores. They are in sleep, appetite, friendships, and the small changes in how your teenager moves through home.

MindLift Alliance has an office at 8951 Collin McKinney Parkway, accessible via US-75 from most of Collin County. We offer evening appointments after school and secure video sessions if driving is the barrier. Most major Texas insurance is accepted, and we work to make cost transparent from the first call. Your teenager does not have to wait months or travel an hour to start talking to someone who listens.

  • She won’t go to school some days
  • The anxiety just shows up as anger
  • He’s fine academically but barely sleeping
  • Started a new school mid-year and shut down
  • We moved & she stopped trying to make friends
  • His anger spirals & we don’t know how to help
If your teen is in immediate danger or talking about ending their life, call 911, or call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Teens can also text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line. LGBTQ+ young people can reach The Trevor Project 24/7 on 1-866-488-7386. For eating and body-image concerns, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline is staffed by licensed clinicians on 1-866-662-1235. This page describes scheduled outpatient therapy and is not a crisis service.

Parents almost always make the first appointment. That is normal and expected.

Free consultation

First session

Your teen meets their therapist. Nothing is forced and nothing is extracted.

The work

Goals set with your teen, progress shared with you, at a pace that keeps them engaged.

Earn the trust first, or nothing else works

Teenagers are unusually good at detecting an adult with an agenda. Our clinicians are trained in CBT, DBT skills, and family-systems work, and they spend the early sessions establishing that the room genuinely belongs to your teen.

  • Trust before insight. A teenager who does not trust the room will not use it. That comes first, and it takes as long as it takes.
  • You stay informed. You will know how therapy is going and anything affecting safety. You will not get a transcript.
  • CBT, DBT and family systems. The approaches with the strongest evidence base for adolescents, matched to your teen.
  • Licensed and confidential. All therapists are licensed in Texas and regulated through BHEC.

Questions from Collin County parents

My teenager sleeps four hours a night and says it’s normal. They’re doing fine at school, but I’m worried this will catch up with them. Is this actually a problem?
Sleep deprivation in high-performing teens often goes unnoticed because grades don’t slip—yet. The impact shows up later: mood becomes harder to manage, focus fragments, and the body’s stress response shifts. Four hours is genuinely unsustainable. This isn’t about willpower; something is keeping them awake, and that’s worth understanding now rather than waiting for a crisis.
They say counseling is pointless because nothing is wrong. How do I get them to actually engage if they don’t think they need help?
You don’t have to convince them first. Many high-performing teens come in skeptical and discover the session gives them something they didn’t know they needed—usually permission to stop managing everyone else’s expectations. We don’t start by telling them what’s wrong; we listen to what matters to them. Engagement often follows.
How far away is your McKinney office, and can we do sessions near home?
You’re likely on US-75, which connects Plano, Allen, Anna, and the surrounding area directly to our McKinney office—usually a straightforward drive. We also offer secure video sessions if that works better for your schedule, and evening appointments after school are available most weeks.
Does my insurance cover this, and what will you tell me about what happens in sessions?
We accept most major insurance plans; check our full list at mindliftalliance.com/insurance-accepted-at-mindlift-alliance/. Confidentiality protects your teenager, with one exception: we’ll tell you immediately if there’s safety risk. Otherwise, session content stays private—that’s what makes it safe for them to be honest.
How soon could we get an appointment?
Most new clients are seen within one week. We understand you’re reaching out because something matters, and we move quickly to get your teenager started.
