When your teenager in Lewisville is working substantial hours

What parents tell us they’re seeing

Lewisville’s economy has shifted toward service and retail work, and your teenager is likely part of that workforce. The town’s growth along the I-35E corridor has brought younger families and more two-income households, which means many teens are working substantial hours alongside school. This is not inherently problematic, but the combination of employment, academics, and social development creates a specific pressure point: your teenager is managing adult responsibilities before they have finished growing, and the signs of strain often appear quietly.

When a teenager is working significant hours, the first thing parents notice is tiredness. The second is grades holding steady (which can mask deeper trouble). What you may not immediately connect is the withdrawal from friends, the irritability that surfaces at home, or the shift in appetite and sleep patterns that happen when stress becomes chronic. Your teenager may seem fine on paper while feeling stretched thin. They may not complain because they think this is what they are supposed to do. The honest signals are not academic: they are relational, physical, and emotional. By the time grades slip, something has been straining for weeks.

MindLift Alliance is located at 8951 Collin McKinney Parkway in McKinney, a straightforward drive north on I-35E from Lewisville. We also offer secure video sessions if your schedule or your teenager’s work hours make that easier. We have evening appointments after school, and we accept most major Texas insurance. Your teenager does not need to do this alone, and neither do you.

  • She’s working twenty hours a week while keeping grades up
  • Exhausted all the time, even when she sleeps enough
  • Balancing his job schedule with sports and homework feels impossible
  • She’s too tired to do anything but work & school
  • Money from his job is going somewhere, won’t say where
  • No time for friends anymore because of work commitments
If your teen is in immediate danger or talking about ending their life, call 911, or call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Teens can also text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line. LGBTQ+ young people can reach The Trevor Project 24/7 on 1-866-488-7386. For eating and body-image concerns, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline is staffed by licensed clinicians on 1-866-662-1235. This page describes scheduled outpatient therapy and is not a crisis service.

The first call is usually yours

You call, not your teen

Parents almost always make the first appointment. That is normal and expected.

Free consultation

We talk through what you are seeing and whether therapy is the right next step.

First session

Your teen meets their therapist. Nothing is forced and nothing is extracted.

The work

Goals set with your teen, progress shared with you, at a pace that keeps them engaged.

Earn the trust first, or nothing else works

Teenagers are unusually good at detecting an adult with an agenda. Our clinicians are trained in CBT, DBT skills, and family-systems work, and they spend the early sessions establishing that the room genuinely belongs to your teen.

  • Trust before insight. A teenager who does not trust the room will not use it. That comes first, and it takes as long as it takes.
  • You stay informed. You will know how therapy is going and anything affecting safety. You will not get a transcript.
  • CBT, DBT and family systems. The approaches with the strongest evidence base for adolescents, matched to your teen.
  • Licensed and confidential. All therapists are licensed in Texas and regulated through BHEC.

Questions from Lewisville parents

“`html <details><summary>My teenager works 20+ hours a week and is exhausted. Is this normal, or should I be worried?</summary><div class="ans">Work during school years is common, but 20+ hours often means your teenager is managing too many demands at once. Exhaustion that affects schoolwork, sleep, or mood isn't something to wait out. A counselor can help you both figure out what's sustainable and what might be driving the need to work this much.</div></details> <details><summary>They say work is the only place they feel competent. Their grades have slipped and they're defensive about it. What's going on?</summary><div class="ans">When school feels hard but work feels manageable, teenagers sometimes pour energy into the latter. This can signal they need support with confidence, academic pressure, or how they're measuring their own worth. It's worth exploring what's underneath the pattern rather than just the hours worked.</div></details> <details><summary>How far is your McKinney office, and can we do sessions around their work schedule?</summary><div class="ans">You're about 20 minutes north of us on I-35E. We offer evening appointments after school and work, plus secure video sessions if that's easier for your family. Many working teenagers find video more convenient than the drive.</div></details> <details><summary>Does insurance cover this, and what will you tell me about what they discuss with you?</summary><div class="ans">We accept most major insurance plans – you can check coverage on our website. Your teenager's privacy is protected: we won't share details of their sessions unless there's a safety concern. You'll know if that line gets crossed.</div></details> <details><summary>How quickly could we get an appointment?</summary><div class="ans">Most new clients are seen within one week. We know fitting counseling around work and school is tricky, so we prioritize getting you started fast and finding times that actually work for your family.</div></details> “`
