When grades are great but sleep has disappeared in Plano

What parents tell us they’re seeing

Plano’s high-performing schools and competitive culture create an invisible pressure that many parents don’t recognize until their teenager has been managing it alone for months. The district’s academic reputation, combined with the commute patterns along US-75 that bring working parents home later in the evening, means your teenager often has hours of unstructured time to absorb achievement expectations without adult presence. This is not a reflection of parenting or community standards—it is the structural reality of how many Plano households operate, and it leaves room for significant distress to develop quietly.

Your teenager may have a solid GPA, be involved in activities, and appear to be managing fine. What you are more likely to notice, if you look, is that their sleep has shifted—they are going to bed later, waking earlier, or sleeping poorly even when they have time to rest. Appetite changes. They have withdrawn from friends they used to see regularly, or stopped mentioning social plans. They are more irritable at home, or conversely, more withdrawn and less present even when they are physically there. Parents often wait because the grades are still good and nothing feels urgent. Sleep disruption and friendship withdrawal are the honest signals that something is pressing on your teenager’s mind.

We offer evening appointments after school so your teenager can attend without disrupting their schedule, and sessions are available in our McKinney office at 8951 Collin McKinney Parkway or by secure video. Most major Texas insurance plans are accepted. Getting help now, while your teenager’s functioning is still intact, is what allows them to work through what is weighing on them before it has further cost.

  • She’s doing great in school but won’t sleep
  • Grades are fine, but something feels off
  • Perfect performance, but we’re worried about her
  • He looks fine on paper, not fine at home
  • Everything’s good academically, but the exhaustion is real
  • Straight A’s & we still feel like we’re failing
If your teen is in immediate danger or talking about ending their life, call 911, or call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Teens can also text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line. LGBTQ+ young people can reach The Trevor Project 24/7 on 1-866-488-7386. For eating and body-image concerns, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline is staffed by licensed clinicians on 1-866-662-1235. This page describes scheduled outpatient therapy and is not a crisis service.

The first call is usually yours

You call, not your teen

Parents almost always make the first appointment. That is normal and expected.

Free consultation

We talk through what you are seeing and whether therapy is the right next step.

First session

Your teen meets their therapist. Nothing is forced and nothing is extracted.

The work

Goals set with your teen, progress shared with you, at a pace that keeps them engaged.

Earn the trust first, or nothing else works

Teenagers are unusually good at detecting an adult with an agenda. Our clinicians are trained in CBT, DBT skills, and family-systems work, and they spend the early sessions establishing that the room genuinely belongs to your teen.

  • Trust before insight. A teenager who does not trust the room will not use it. That comes first, and it takes as long as it takes.
  • You stay informed. You will know how therapy is going and anything affecting safety. You will not get a transcript.
  • CBT, DBT and family systems. The approaches with the strongest evidence base for adolescents, matched to your teen.
  • Licensed and confidential. All therapists are licensed in Texas and regulated through BHEC.

Questions from Plano parents

My teen’s grades are solid and they seem fine on the surface, but they’re sleeping terribly—up until 2 or 3 a.m., exhausted during the day. Is this worth getting help for, or am I overreacting?
You’re not overreacting. Sleep disruption at this level signals something real is happening, even when grades hold steady. High-performing teens often mask stress and anxiety well. Poor sleep affects mood regulation, decision-making, and long-term health, separate from academic performance. It’s worth exploring what’s driving it now rather than waiting.
They say nothing is wrong, but I can see the fatigue wearing on them. How do I get them to open up about what’s actually keeping them awake?
You don’t have to get them to open up one-on-one first. Sometimes a teen will talk more freely with someone outside the family, especially if the conversation isn’t framed as you being worried about them. A counselor creates that neutral space. You can frame it as help with sleep patterns specifically, not as “we think something’s wrong.”
How far is your McKinney office from Plano, and do you offer evening appointments?
We’re about 25 minutes north on US-75, depending on traffic. Yes, we offer evening appointments after school, and we also provide secure video sessions so you can avoid the drive entirely if that works better for your family’s schedule.
What will you tell me about what we talk about in sessions? Do I get to know what’s going on?
Your teen’s privacy is protected—we won’t share session details with you unless there’s a safety concern. What we will do is help you understand what’s realistic to ask your teen directly, and we’ll work with you on sleep patterns and any family factors that might be relevant. You can view our full confidentiality policy on our insurance page.
How quickly can we get an appointment?
Most new clients are seen within one week. We understand that sleep disruption affects everything, so we prioritize getting you in. Contact us to schedule, and we’ll find a time that works with school and your availability.
