When moving stops your teen from trying

What parents in The Colony recognize

The Colony sits on I-35E between Dallas and the northern suburbs, and that geography matters. Families here are often in transition—relocating for work, moving between districts, arriving from elsewhere in Texas or beyond. The school system serves a mobile population, and housing turnover is higher than in more established neighborhoods. Your teenager may have changed schools once, twice, or more since elementary school. Each move disrupts peer networks, and after a while, some teenagers stop investing in friendships altogether. Why make a best friend if your family might leave again in two years? This adaptive shutdown can look like contentment on the surface, but it is often a protective mechanism that leaves your teenager more isolated than you realize.

When your teenager has stopped making close friends, the signs are easy to miss. School attendance and grades may remain stable, which falsely reassures parents. What you are more likely to notice is increasing time alone in their room, fewer invitations out, and a kind of emotional flatness about social life—not sadness exactly, but indifference. Some teenagers describe it as “not seeing the point.” Sleep changes, appetite shifts, and withdrawal from family activities often precede any academic dip. Parents frequently wait for a crisis or a failing grade before seeking help, but by that point, your teenager has already internalized the belief that connection is temporary and effort is wasted. Early intervention, before that belief hardens, makes a real difference.

MindLift Alliance offers therapy in our McKinney office at 8951 Collin McKinney Parkway, accessible from The Colony via I-35E, or by secure video session from home. We hold evening appointments after school and accept most major Texas insurance plans. Your teenager does not need to be in crisis to start; many of our most productive relationships with teens begin when a parent recognizes withdrawal and reaches out.

  • We’ve moved so many times in five years
  • She doesn’t even try to make friends anymore
  • New school, new friends, new everything—again
  • He says what’s the point of getting close
  • Keeps her walls up at every new place
  • Started out excited about moving, now he’s just tired
If your teen is in immediate danger or talking about ending their life, call 911, or call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Teens can also text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line. LGBTQ+ young people can reach The Trevor Project 24/7 on 1-866-488-7386. For eating and body-image concerns, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline is staffed by licensed clinicians on 1-866-662-1235. This page describes scheduled outpatient therapy and is not a crisis service.

The work

Goals set with your teen, progress shared with you, at a pace that keeps them engaged.

Earn the trust first, or nothing else works

Teenagers are unusually good at detecting an adult with an agenda. Our clinicians are trained in CBT, DBT skills, and family-systems work, and they spend the early sessions establishing that the room genuinely belongs to your teen.

  • Trust before insight. A teenager who does not trust the room will not use it. That comes first, and it takes as long as it takes.
  • You stay informed. You will know how therapy is going and anything affecting safety. You will not get a transcript.
  • CBT, DBT and family systems. The approaches with the strongest evidence base for adolescents, matched to your teen.
  • Licensed and confidential. All therapists are licensed in Texas and regulated through BHEC.

Questions from The Colony parents

My teenager has moved schools three times in five years. They used to make friends easily, but now they don’t even try. Is this just how they are, or is something wrong?
Repeated moves change how teenagers approach friendship. Many stop investing emotionally because they’ve learned that closeness ends in goodbye. This isn’t laziness or shyness—it’s a protective pattern. Working with a counselor can help your teen process those losses and rebuild confidence in connection, even when stability feels uncertain.
How do I know if my child’s reluctance to “do therapy” is normal resistance or a sign they’re really struggling?
Normal resistance is “I don’t want to go.” Real struggle often looks like withdrawal, flatness, or going through the motions at school and home without seeming to care. If your teen has stopped bothering with friendships or activities they once enjoyed, that’s worth taking seriously now, not waiting to see if it passes.
How far is your McKinney office from The Colony, and do you offer video sessions?
The Colony is about 25 minutes north of our McKinney office via I-35E. We offer both in-person and secure video appointments, so you can choose what works best for your family’s schedule and comfort level.
What will you tell me about what my teenager talks about in sessions?
Confidentiality is how teenagers feel safe enough to be honest. We don’t report routine conversation back to parents. We do break confidentiality if there’s immediate safety risk. We’re transparent about that boundary from the start, and we can discuss what information sharing looks like for your family.
How soon could we get an appointment?
Most new clients are seen within one week. We’ll contact you after you submit your inquiry to confirm availability and answer any other questions before your first session.
