About Texas LPC Supervision

What is a Texas LPC Supervisor?

An LPC Supervisor (LPC-S) in Texas is a fully licensed professional counselor who has completed additional BHEC-approved training and is authorized to provide clinical supervision to LPC Associates. They play a critical role in guiding new counselors through the 3,000-hour supervised experience required for full LPC licensure.

What is the difference between an LPC and an LPC-S?

An LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) is a fully licensed counselor who can practice independently. An LPC-S has completed additional supervisor training and is authorized to supervise LPC Associates. Both licenses are issued and renewed through BHEC.

How many supervision hours are required in Texas?

Texas requires 3,000 total hours of supervised experience, of which at least 1,500 must be direct client contact hours. Supervision must span a minimum of 12 months.

Can I do supervision online / virtually?

Yes. BHEC permits telehealth-based supervision. Many supervisors in our directory offer virtual or hybrid supervision, which makes it possible to work with a supervisor anywhere in Texas regardless of your physical location.

How many supervisees can one supervisor take on?

Texas BHEC limits each LPC Supervisor to a maximum of six active supervisees at any given time.

Finding a Supervisor

What should I look for in a supervisor?

Look for someone whose clinical specialties align with your work, who offers a supervision format and schedule that fits your needs, and who has a clear approach to feedback and documentation. The supervisory relationship is important — consider scheduling a consultation before committing.

How much does LPC supervision cost in Texas?

Individual supervision typically costs $75–$175 per hour, depending on the supervisor’s experience and location. Group supervision is often more affordable. Some employers offer supervision as a benefit or stipend — ask during your job search.

What paperwork is involved in the supervisory relationship?

You and your supervisor must complete and sign a supervisory agreement at the start of the relationship. This document outlines the supervision plan, session format, fee structure, and documentation responsibilities. Keep copies of all supervision logs — you’ll need them when applying for full LPC licensure.

Becoming a Supervisor

What training do I need to become an LPC Supervisor in Texas?

Texas BHEC requires a minimum of 40 hours of supervisor training from a BHEC-approved provider. The training must cover supervision models, ethics, multicultural considerations, documentation, and supervisee assessment. MindLift Alliance offers BHEC-approved LPC-S training.

Can I get CE credit for supervisor training?

Yes. Approved supervisor training courses often count toward your LPC continuing education requirement. Check with your training provider and BHEC for confirmation on credit applicability for your specific renewal cycle.

How long does it take to get the LPC-S designation?

The timeline depends on how quickly you complete your 40-hour training and how long BHEC takes to process your application. Most counselors complete the process within 3–6 months of starting the required training.
