How to become an LMFT Supervisor in Texas
The 40-hour training is one step in a five-step process. Here is the whole sequence, so you know what sits on either side of the course.
1. Confirm your licensure
To apply for Texas LMFT Supervisor status, you must hold a Texas LMFT license in good standing and document at least *3,000 hours of independent LMFT practice over a minimum of three years*. Time practicing as an LMFT Associate does not count as independent LMFT practice. You must also complete a qualifying supervision education pathway and receive BHEC approval before supervising LMFT Associates.
2. Complete 40 hours of training

Submit your supervisor status application with proof of training and supporting documentation. The Supervisor Status Designation Checklist included after Module 8 lists the items in submission order.
4. Set up your infrastructure
Before your first associate you need a written supervisory agreement, an hours-logging system, a consistent note format, and a remediation plan. This is what most counselors are least prepared for — and it is built into the course.
5. Maintain your designation

Does this course meet the Texas 40-hour supervisor training requirement?
Yes. This course is designed to provide the 40 hours of clinical supervision training described in 22 TAC §801.143(m). The curriculum addresses Texas LMFT supervision requirements, and the hours are listed by module on this page. Completing the course is one part of the application process. You must also meet the Board’s LMFT licensure and independent practice requirements and submit your application to BHEC. BHEC determines whether your training and application qualify for LMFT Supervisor status.
How long do I have to finish, and do I lose access afterward?
The course is self-paced, but you must complete all lessons, quizzes, and assignments within 90 days of enrollment to earn the certificate. After completion, you may continue to access the course materials.

Is this course actually graded, or can I click through it?
It is graded. Seven end-of-module quizzes with a 75% passing threshold and seven written reflection assignments, including a supervision-style self-assessment. You cannot skip to the end. That is deliberate — supervisor status carries real gatekeeping and liability responsibilities, and the course is structured so you have genuinely worked through the ethical and documentation material before taking on an associate.
What do I receive besides the training itself?
The course includes Texas LMFT supervision resources: the BHEC **Supervisory Agreement Form** and **Supervised Experience Verification Form**, along with reusable templates for a supervision contract, remediation plan, supervision notes, couple and family case conceptualization, and an LMFT Associate documentation checklist. How does online training compare to an in-person workshop?
The requirement is 40 hours of supervisor training; it does not have to be delivered in a conference room. An in-person weekend compresses 40 hours into two or three days, while a self-paced course lets you sit with the ethics and documentation material and return to it. It also costs less, since you are not paying for a venue or travel. What you give up is live discussion — which is why this course leans on case studies, sample scripts, and written reflection.
When do I get my certificate?
Your certificate of completion generates automatically as soon as you finish the final module and pass the required assessments. There is no waiting period and no need to email anyone to request it. Download it immediately and include it with your supervisor status application.
Does completing this make me an LMFT Supervisor automatically?
No, and be cautious of any provider who implies otherwise. This course satisfies the training component. Supervisor status is granted by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council after you apply and demonstrate that you meet all eligibility requirements.
